Bones of the saintly King of Hungary identified in ossuary-jumble

Archaeologists have discovered their bones belonging to Saint Ladislaus King of the 11th century of Hungary in a mass of bones of more than 900 individuals kept in an ossuary located in Szekesfehervar in central Hungary. This makes him the sole saint with Relics that have been scientifically proven as being his osteological remains.

The site is now the early 20th-century architectural dream called Bory Castle, the ossuary was linked to the city's basilica , whose remains are available to visitors to the castle in it is known as the Medieval Ruin Garden. The basilica was at the heart of Budapest's capital city. middle ages Kingdom in Hungary. There were 37 kings who were crowned and 15 were buried there. Jewels for the crown of Hungary were stored there. There was the Holy Crown of Hungary was kept in the palace. The actual throne of Hungary was held there. The cathedral was destroyed by the invading Ottoman army in 1543, and the royal graves were robbed. The tombs of the king Bela III (r. 1172-1196) and his lady-in-waiting, queen Anna from Antioch, were unaffected.

Researchers at researchers from the University of Szeged extracted DNA samples from 400 bones and compared them with DNA samples they previously retrieved in royal remains Bela III. The DNA tests found that the bones of saint King Ladislaus with those of his descendant five generations after.

King Ladislaus I was king of Hungary between 1077 and his demise in 1095. King Ladislaus I was warrior-king who succeeded in helping to stabilize a nation that was racked by conflict between the political and religious as a result of King Stephen I's efforts to establish Christianity in the early 11th century. He completed the task Stephen had begun, forcefully to ban traditional religions and completely setting up Christianity as the sole religion of the kingdom. After he defeated Croatia and the rest of Croatia, he carried out exactly the same thing in Croatia.

An advocate of the Papacy during the conflict of Investiture between the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor, the King was the one who founded churches and monasteries and was in charge of the creation and administration of bishoprics throughout the entirety of his territory. He was preparing for a crusade when was killed in 1095. Because of his efforts to spread Christianity in the sword-point as well as an effective administrator the Pope canonized him by Pope Celestine III in 1192. Because he was born in and was raised in Krakow following the death of his father King Bela I was forced by a rebellion to leave Hungary, Ladislaus would become the patron saint of Poles living in Hungary.

The analysis of the DNA of the ossuary remains has also identified the bones from Andrew II from Hungary who was the his son Bella III and Anna of Antioch. The researchers plan to find more Hungarian royals by using an DNA sample taken from John Corvinus (1473-1504), the natural brother of King Matthias (1443-1490) and his mistress. They also have DNA samples taken from the skull of Mary of Hungary Queen of Naples (ca. 1257-1323).

The main objective is to retrieve the remains of members of the royal family and then bury them in designated graves. Another objective is to create faces reconstructions from the monarchs of Hungary. The skulls that were recovered from the ossuary were scans for this goal. Together with DNA data on eye color and hair and shape, the reconstructed skulls will be available for viewing via VR devices.
